The struggle against the monopoly of Microsoft on the desktop now has a new player. IBM has also joined the community of developers of OpenOffice. Org and launches his own sequel: IBM Lotus Symphony.
The initial suite of tools integrated with Lotus Notes collaboration suite, IBM Lotus Symphony incorporates the main features of Open Office, in which it has shared much of the source code. No surprise, the various elements that comprise the suite, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, are very classic and will suit the majority of common tasks.
With the support of Open Document Format – validated as a standard by international organizations – it supports native export to PDF, and compatible with Microsoft Office documents and many other features.
If IBM Lotus Symphony inherits the qualities of openness of Open Office, it also draws a line under its faults. Forget the phrase "free = ugly". The interface is clear and colorful. The icons are readable and enjoyable. The interface is not left with a side panel, resizable and detachable, which allows you to change many settings (like the size of a font or alignment of a paragraph) without going through menus.
More original: the interface remains constant whatever the type of document. They appear in the tabs and nothing prevents us from having next to a text document and a spreadsheet. To easily navigate among your tabs, a feature to display a thumbnail of all open documents on one page and search their file names.
Still very young, IBM Lotus Symphony is a suite already very attractive. A new player to follow closely in the field of open office.
