Question by Lykaios: What are the disadvantages of filing a free file to prepare your taxes?
If your adjusted gross income was ,000 or less in 2007, you can use Free File to prepare and e-file your taxes online.
My question is what are the disadvantages of using free file as compared to the standard 1040 forms or the standard e-file?

It’s just a form filler type of program so none really Vs doing a 1040 by hand . . .
BUT usually people do not know all the changes and tend to miss legit deductions or worse yet try to take deductions they don’t qualify for. That’s is where programs like Turbo Tax have more guidance and Tax preparers have depth of experience/training to get you the best outcome possible.

Paper forms use up paper, add clutter, do not calculate automatically (math errors), or could be misread for data entry. I do my taxes on PDF fill out forms first to make sure that any electronic method matches.
When you e-file, the only potential errors are “your” data entry, calculations are automatic, and there is minimal paperwork handling at the IRS end (just any non-electronic payments/refunds).
As far as free e-file or pay e-file there is no difference in the data or speed. The only difference is whether there are optional features you want (additional reading material, archiving, etc.). There are sites you can free e-file regardless of income, but I paid them $9.95 to retain data for next year’s taxes.
